MCU – Location of the Last Infinity Gems Revealed

Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet

So far, and until the end of Phase III, the MacGuffin of the MCU has been the Infinity Gauntlet with its gems. Thus, until now, only 4 of these stones have been revealed.

One was in the first Captain America movie and was discovered to be an Infinity Gem in the first Avengers movie (the Tesseract, currently in Asgard), the second one was revealed in Thor: The Dark World (the Aether, currently with the Collector), the third one was revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy (the Orb, currently on Xandar), while the fourth one with Loki from the start (Scepter, currently on Vision's forehead).

Where could the last MCU Infinity stones be?

An interesting theory

Is that an acrostic for Thanos?
Is that an acrostic for Thanos?

First of all, there is this interesting theory about the Infinity Stones in the MCU. And, according to this theory, when combining the beginning letters of each stone, you can spell Thanos (Tesseract, Aether, Orb, and Spectre).

Of course, one can say that, for example, some of these names are not the ones of the stones themselves, but of the containers - for that matter, only the Aether can be the name of the Infinity Stone. But, then again, if this theory proves to be true, than it will make Thanos the only one who could actually handle all the power of the stones united, as if destined to wear them.

And this, in turn, means that the Infinity Gauntlet will forever be useless when Thanos is eventually defeated. Which gives way for other MacGuffins to appear in the MCU, thus giving birth to other overarching stories in the future phases.

In the comics"¦

Yes, that is and isn't Warlock's cocoon
Yes, that is and isn’t Warlock’s cocoon

The history of the Soul Gem in the comics is a pretty complicated one. And that is because, unlike the MCU, there are quite a few characters who have come in contact with it.

The most important one is Adam Warlock, about whom we haven't seen any official hint until now. Of course, there is James Gunn who said this about a hidden Easter Egg in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie: "Yeah, there's a cocoon that's exactly like Adam Warlock's cocoon. I wasn't really thinking that much when I put that in. That was my idea to put that in there. They're like, "˜What should we put in?' So I went in through the Marvel handbook and just picked cool things that looked neat to put into the boxes. It looked like Adam's Warlock cocoon, so now everyone thinks he's out of there and you know"¦ I don't know.

But that is about all - a director being undecided whether or not Adam Warlock exists in the MCU. And it is important, since in the comics the Soul Gem has been quite so many times in the possession of Adam.

Furthermore, as the same director said, he has no plans on actually introducing this one particular character in Vol. II. So where does that leave us?

The answer is revealed on the next page!

In the MCU"¦

It's all in the eyes
It’s all in the eyes

Well, there is another character in the MCU, whose name starts with an H and who can be the bearer of the Soul Gem - without even knowing!

And that character is none other than Heimdall. Bear with us for a second"¦

While he does have a stone on his chest plate resembling an Infinity Stone, we are actually intrigued by something else. First, Heimdall says that he can see the souls of the people and not the people themselves (in Thor: The Dark World).

Then we have his eyes - sure enough, they aren't necessarily of the same colour as the stone in the comics - but this is the MCU. So, when Thor had his vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron he saw all his fellow Asgardians in Hel. But only Heimdall had no eyes at all.

That is one of the strongest hints! But, for the sake of the conversation, why can't Heimdall be the bearer of the stone?

Too many stones in one place

There is a reason why he didn't use the power of the stone
There is a reason why he didn’t use the power of the stone

While he does say that he sees the souls and not the people, in the same movie Lady Sif tells the Collector (when delivering the Aether) that Asgard cannot keep the stone because it already has one in its possession. And that is the Tesseract. So this means that in no way MCU's Soul Gem can be Heimdall.

Unless, of course, nobody knows that it is in him, not even himself. Maybe Odin knows, though - but Odin didn't say anything about the Tesseract being an Infinity Stone prior to the first Avengers' revelation. So nobody knows about the location of the Soul Gem in the MCU.

So Heimdall couldn't have used its power when the Dark Elves attacked Asgard and Lady Sif had no idea that there are already 2 Infinity Stones in Asgard. This fits perfectly with what Kevin Feige said about Thor: Ragnarok, that it will be one of the most important flicks of MCU's Phase III.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange
Doctor Strange

In MCU's Phase III we are going to find out the location of all the gems and we are going to see how the Infinity War unfolds. Phase III will also introduce Black Panther's solo flick, as well as the first movies for Captain Marvel, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.

So where could we find the Time Stone?

Well, it won't be in the Black Panther flick for sure, since the character will first appear during the Civil War, just like we don't believe it will be in the first Spider-Man flick. Captain Marvel will arrive after the Infinity War has already begun, so"¦

There is this other interesting theory, based also on the THANOS acrostic theory, which says that Doctor Strange will find himself in the possession of the last MCU Infinity Stone.

The Eye of Agamotto – the final Infinity Stone in the MCU
