Like Spider-Man and Black Panther, Marvel Comics superhero Doctor Strange is arriving for the first time at the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year. But unlike the other two superheroes, Benedict Cumberbatch's character won't be introduced in Captain America: Civil War before they return with their standalone movies. The Sorcerer Supreme will make his debut in his first standalone movie which releases on November 4, 2016.
While the MCU is all connected, Marvel Studios didn't want Doctor Strange’s movie to tie in with the previous installments or set up anything for future movies. And that's what C. Robert Cargill, one of the co-screenwriters of the movie, tells the The Sunday Service (via MCU Exchange). He claims that the studio wanted the Scott Derrickson venture to "stand on its own", explaining:
They're aware that several of their movies are starting to feel cluttered"¦there's a joke that these movies are essentially two hour-long commercials for their next two-hour long commercials, and that's not what they want to be.
According to the co-screenwriter, the only pressure that existed from Marvel was to "do something different and fresh". Cargill further adds that the studio doesn't want "one Marvel Movie look and feel" for all of the MCU installments.
The first Doctor Strange trailer is “a small taste” of the movie's craziness!
The recently released first trailer of the Doctor Strange movie is definitely something that doesn't look and feel like a typical Marvel movie. But C. Robert Cargill claims that the trailer is just "the definition of a teaser" and there's a whole lot more in store for us in the movie. He says:
You are only getting like a small taste of just how crazy this movie gets. We have only just the slightest hints of magic in there. There are major characters you don't even glimpse in that trailer, there is so much stuff going on that this thing is just nutty, the stuff they let us do, I can't believe they let us do it.
During the interview, the co-screenwriter also suggests that Doctor Strange is "one of the most multi-cultural films” that have arrived in years.
