Mark Mothersbaugh, whose previous work includes scoring The LEGO Movie, has signed on as the composer for Thor: Ragnarok, the third Thor installment currently filming in Australia.
Mothersbaugh has many impressive film scores on his resume. He wrote music for Happy Gilmore, The Rugrats Movie (and every season of the Nickelodeon cartoon), Pitch Perfect 2, 21 Jump Street, and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, to name just a few. He is also widely known as the lead singer and keyboardist of his band, Devo.
Mothersbaugh will be the third composer to work on the Thor franchise, following Patrick Doyle, who scored the first film, and Brian Tyler, who scored the second. It will be interesting to see how Mothersbaugh’s new wave roots translate into the music for an action-packed superhero film.
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017, with stars Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston returning as Thor and Loki, respectively. They’ll be joined by Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, and Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster.
