Following the success of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, James Gunn has earned a role in the development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond Phase III. This means that the director will have his say in regard to the MCU's future cosmic adventures, but it won't happen until Avengers 4’s 2019 release date.
Until then, James Gunn is tasked with finding the proper ending for the current Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. We already know how he's going to do that, since Vol. 2 ended with a tease of the main antagonists in Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
With the aid of Adam Warlock, Ayesha and her Sovereign will return (in the MCU, the Sovereign created Warlock). Warlock is on a different level of power when compared to the superheroes in the Guardians of the Galaxy.
However, the team might receive some help from a superhero James Gunn has teased for the film:

In the comics, Quasar is a vastly more powerful character than the current Guardians. As it happens with superheroes, the code name of Quasar has been used by quite a few over the years. We can exclude the Nova version from the start, since James Gunn has already said that he isn't a fan of the character.
It’s also likely that we can exclude the Neutron version, since his first appearance was in the X-Men comics and he’s a member of Shi'ar’s Imperial Guard.
This means that the director could go with Wendell Vaughn or Phyla-Vell. Since we know that Gunn wanted to have an earthling in Guardians of the Galaxy, we can probably exclude Wendell Vaughn, as well.
What do you think? Are you excited about this news?
For the moment, there is no official release date for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
