As fans count the days until Avengers: Infinity War rolls into theaters, James Cameron looks forward to the day when they’re fed up with the Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Cameron, who directed Terminator, Titanic, and Avatar, recently sat down with reporters to promote his upcoming docuseries, AMC Visionaries: James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction. He also took advantage of the opportunity to take a potshot at the fan-favorite Marvel superheroes.
Cameron told the reporters that he couldn’t wait for the day when people finally grow tired of the Avengers. After professing his love for the movies, he described the superheroes as "hyper-gonadal males" (via IndieWire):
I'm hoping we'll start getting Avengers fatigue here pretty soon. Not that I don't love the movies. It's just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours, and wrecking cities in the process. It's like, oy!
This isn't the first time that Cameron’s irked superhero movie fans with a negative comment. He railed against 2017’s Wonder Woman, saying that it was "a step backward" for Hollywood. Patty Jenkins came up with a brilliant response, but Cameron was apparently unaffected.
It doesn’t look as though Cameron will get his way in the near future, as Infinity War’s debut weekend looks to be on track to break the box office records of all of its fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe installments. Some analysts predict that it might even shatter the opening weekend record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.
