We’ve watched five different Spider-Man solo movies over the last decade and a half, but next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming will be very different, as it will be the first one to feature Iron Man! Robert Downey Jr., the actor who plays Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has sealed a deal with Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios to appear in the upcoming June 7, 2017 release! The confirmation comes from very reliable outlets, such as The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
Spider-Man: Homecoming won't be the first time the two will share a screen, though. Tom Holland's Peter Parker will make his debut in Captain America: Civil War, which also features RDJ's character. In fact, it's Iron Man who shouts "Underoos!" as a cue to Spider-Man to introduce himself to Team Cap and the whole world. We've seen that in the last trailer for the May 6 release.
And from what we've heard, it's Tony Stark who acts as Peter Parker’s mentor. So, a key relationship is established between the two. And why would Sony and Marvel not want to continue that thread in Spider-Man: Homecoming?
The size of Iron Man's role Spider-Man: Homecoming is unknown at the moment, as plot details are still under wraps.
For a while now, we've been hearing about Tony Stark's appearance in the Spider-Man standalone movie. Earlier this month, Marvel President Kevin Feige commented that Marvel superheroes might appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming. A week ago, RDJ claimed that he hadn't signed to appear in the movie, but he did say that "perhaps" he would.
However, Iron Man isn't the only name we’ve heard mentioned in connection with an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Captain America or has also been rumored to be playing a role in the movie, which is casting in preparation for the start of filming in June. So, we might get confirmation soon on whether Cap or any other MCU character will feature in it.
