Building up excitement for Marvel’s panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has just given us our first look at the team’s bigger roster with new official concept art by Marvel Studios artist Andy Park. Joining the original Guardians are Nebula (Karen Gillan), Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff).
Fans will be familiar with both Nebula and Yondu as they appeared in the first movie to make life hard for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Groot in various ways. It will be exciting to see what happens to make the two decide to join the spacefaring team of heroic outlaws.

On the other hand, the artwork also gives us our first peek at the brand new character Mantis. "She has never really experienced social interaction," executive producer Jonathan Schwartz tells EW. "Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from."
While most Marvel Cinematic Universe fans won’t recognize her or what she can do, Mantis has been a Marvel (and at one time, DC) comics superhero for more than 40 years. Aside from her formidable martial arts prowess, the green, antennaed former Avenger’s powers include accelerated healing, superhuman strength and reflexes, psychic empathy, astral projection and precognition. Oh, and she can also communicate with and control plants.
Mantis is played by actress Pom Klementieff, who is best known for her role in Spike Lee’s Oldboy (2013). Klementieff underwent boxing and taekwondo training for that role, so we can expect her to give justice to Mantis’ fighting skills. As to her other powers, Gunn might need to limit them or focus on only a few, as her abilities can make her a one-woman army.
Speaking of plants, Mantis might not be the only new character on the team, according to Schwartz, as we will be treated to a different Groot this time around. The stoic, gentle man-tree of the original gave his life to protect his teammates, but thankfully, he left a sapling that we saw grow into a cute, tiny Groot.
"He doesn't have the wisdom and experience of that Groot," says Schwartz. "He's a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that's sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?"
We’ll have to find out when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits cinemas on May 5, 2017.
