A couple of days ago, James Gunn and Empire revealed a new piece of concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. II. And it was nothing short of amazing - the team was engaged in a fight with a huge tentacled monster, everybody giving their best against it. Well, everybody except Baby Groot, who was having the time of his life.
During a Facebook Q&A session with his fans, James Gunn revealed what that monster is. According to the director, it is a multidimensional being called an Abilisk. He also said that the Guardians of the Galaxy were hired to defeat it, which says a lot about what the team has achieved since they fought Ronan.
Apparently, the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy has transformed the ragtag team of former criminals into actual heroes. And now everybody trusts them - though it isn't clear if they receive a fee for their heroic deeds:

Another thing that isn't crystal clear is what multidimensional means. The easiest explanation is that the beast can hop between dimensions, having originated in a particularly dark one. And this is interesting, especially since this connects, to a certain degree, the Guardians of the Galaxy to other MCU flicks, particularly Ant-Man (which introduced the idea of alternate dimensions) and Doctor Strange (which will further explore this idea).
Of course, we need to mention the most recent reveal concerning Doctor Strange, which is quite a spoilery one, and which can be found here.
The fans already suspect that the Guardians won't fight the Abilisk for an entire movie and that this will be just an opening sequence. But, even so, it is a great nod toward the future of the MCU.
