Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe installment to hit theaters next year, ahead of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok. The sequel to the 2014 surprise blockbuster wrapped up its filming last month.
This leads the fans to speculate about whether we will get our first footage from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at San Diego Comic-Con International later this month. Considering the fact that James Gunn came up with the first footage from the original movie – after just twelve days of filming – during their SDCC Hall H presentation in 2013, it doesn't seem unlikely this time.
And during a recent impromptu fan Q&A on Twitter, the director strongly hints at the arrival of a teaser at SDCC 2016. When a fan asks Gunn about when to expect the first teaser or trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, here's how he responds:
You might get something if you go to our presentation at San Diego Comic Con…other than that, it’ll be a while. https://t.co/w9sYY9QyYz

That's good news for those who will be able to attend their Hall H presentation and bad news for those who won't be able to be there. “Why can't they just release it online after the panel?” asks another fan. In response, James Gunn explains:
Because footage created for Comicon is generally for one viewing only. Usually the VFX aren’t finished. https://t.co/MhsrGQAdc8

Despite the fact that it seems unfair to fans all around the globe, the decision to not release the first footage online during SDCC actually makes sense. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will arrive at theaters ten months later, and there's Doctor Strange to release before that.
Marvel Studios would definitely want to focus on the marketing campaign of the Sorcerer Supreme's first standalone movie for the next few months. They have released just one trailer from that movie to date.
The studio will still have ample time to promote Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 once Doctor Strange has been released. They wouldn't want the May 5, 2017 release to steal the limelight from the November 4, 2016 release during this year's SDCC.
