Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Behind-the-Scenes Photo Starts Countdown to Release Date

Over the weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn helpfully reminded fans exactly how many days remain until the much-anticipated sequel hits the theaters next year. Gunn shared the following behind-the-scenes photo featuring Chris Pratt on his Facebook page, teasing how close we are with just “300 days until GotG Vol 2.”

As the photo was posted last Saturday, July 9, the countdown is currently at 298 days until we get to see the continuation of this motley crew’s (mis)adventures on the big screen on May 5, 2017. Also in the photo is a rather intense-looking man who James Gunn confirmed to be Lars, the first assistant director for the sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt (Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon) and Vin Diesel (Groot) are all reprising their roles in the sequel, along with Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Karen Gillan (Nebula).

Gunn has commented that Nebula, Thanos’ adopted daughter and Gamora’s step-sister, will have a bigger role in Vol. 2, saying, "Nebula is a huge character in Vol 2. Karen Glllan has her make-up applied every day of her many days on set."

Joining the cast are new additions Kurt Russell as Star-Lord’s father, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debecki, Chris Sullivan, and Tommy Flanagan. Sharon Stone and Sylvester Stallone have also been cast, although there are no details as yet on their characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be a continuation of the team’s adventures in the far reaches of space, as they struggle to keep their new family together while delving deeper into the mystery behind Peter Quill’s true parentage. As one of the movies in Marvel’s Phase III, expect events to lead us closer to the climactic confrontation with supervillain Thanos for the upcoming Infinity War two-parter.

Filming for Vol. 2 just wrapped last month, and Gunn has already teased that there will be footage – perhaps even a trailer – that lucky fans attending San Diego Comic-Con 2016 will get to see. Gunn, Pratt, and several other cast members will be in attendance.

Those who can’t make it to the special presentation at SDCC will have to wait for the online release. This might not happen for a while, though, since Marvel will be focusing their marketing efforts on Doctor Strange, but there’s always the chance that a leaked version will be uploaded before then.
