Fantastic Four Sequel is NOT Happening!

Fantastic Four

This year's Fantastic Four has been a true exception to Hollywood's superhero films of recent times! While all the other superhero flicks over the last few years have performed outstandingly in the box office, the Josh Trank venture proved to be a disaster! The movie grossed just $56.1 million domestically and $111.6 million from the rest of the world - a worldwide total of $157.8 million against its production budget of $120 million.

20th Century Fox didn't obviously see the disaster coming - that's why they had scheduled a sequel to be released on June 9, 2017. And they didn't seem to be bothered by the performance of Fantastic Four as the sequel managed to survive in their release schedule for more than three months after three months of witnessing the disaster. But they are actually bothered - indeed they are!

Fox Has Removed It From Their Release Schedule!

20th Century Fox – they have removed the sequel from their release schedule!

Yes, the studio has finally announced the removal of Fantastic Four sequel from their release schedule! June 9, 2017 is now occupied by Paramount Pictures venture World War Z alone. That, to be honest, was inevitable. Fox could, by no means, rush into the sequel after witnessing the performance of Fantastic Four in the box office even though they insisted initially that they would move ahead with the sequel.

Future Of Fantastic Four Franchise - Still Vague!

Will the Fantastic Four move to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

The removal of Fantastic Four sequel from their release schedule doesn't surely mean that Fox is willing to give away the property. The studio still owns the rights of the franchise until 2022 - so, they have ample time to take recovery measures. But that is unlikely to be another reboot of Fantastic Four - coming up with a sequel is apparently the sole possibility.

And they might end up sharing the franchise with Marvel Studios just like Sony did with their Spider-Man franchise. Or they might simply give up the rights of the franchise. But whatever happens, it is unlikely to happen very soon because no one can take the franchise away from Fox in the next six years.
