Love was in the air for Deadpool fans this Valentine’s Day, as a rumor surfaced online suggesting that Kerry Washington was the current frontrunner for the role of Domino in the second standalone movie for Ryan Reynolds' Merc With a Mouth. Sienna Miller and Gugu Mbatha-Raw had each passed on the role before the Django Unchained and Scandal star tested for it and became 20th Century Fox's top choice.
Extra TV had the opportunity to speak with Washington at the 2017 Writers Guild Awards. When they asked whether the rumor that she was up for the role of Domino were true, the 40-year-old smiled, stammered, and said:
I don't have anything to say about that. They [the writers] know more than I do.
Of course, studios typically want actors to keep mum until an official casting announcement is made. But Kerry Washington has expressed interest in playing the female mercenary in Deadpool 2. When asked whether she would accept the role if it came her way, the actress responded:
Of course I would, but of course, you have to get the right person for whatever role.
I get the feeling that Washington auditioned for the role, but a deal hasn't been sealed yet. There's nothing to do but wait for an official confirmation. Otherwise, it’s impossible to be sure.
