Although Captain America and Iron Man are no longer on good terms, both of them will survive Avengers: Infinity War and return in the still-untitled Avengers 4. It appears that their besties will come back, as well.
Sebastian Stan recently confirmed that he’ll appear as Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier, in the fourth Earth's Mightiest Heroes installment. Most recently, Gwyneth Paltrow, who was spotted on the set last month, told The Hollywood Reporter that Don Cheadle will return as James Rhodes, aka War Machine.
Although the interviewer focused on her lifestyle brand, Goop, Paltrow mentioned that she had gone to Atlanta to shoot her Avengers 4 scenes, and added that Cheadle was on the set:
I need to be here right now. I went to Atlanta to do Avengers 4, so I’m in and out for that, and it’s weird to go back and forth"¦But, honestly, I was on set, and thought, “You sit here for two hours sipping tea, Robert Downey, Jr. and Don Cheadle are making me laugh hysterically…Why the hell did I give this up?”
After War Machine was badly injured as the Marvel superheroes battled against each other in Captain America: Civil War, we weren’t sure whether he would make it back for Avengers 4, which will hit theaters on May 3, 2019. The upcoming confrontation with Thanos in the May 4, 2018 release is expected to result in some major casualties, but with Paltrow’s revelations, it’s unlikely that War Machine will be among them.
But don’t forget what lengths the studio went to in order to avoid spoiling Yondu's death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. They had Michael Rooker visit the Avengers: Infinity War set so people would think that he was filming scenes. We wouldn’t be surprised if they were playing the same game with certain characters in the upcoming Russo Brothers flicks.
