In the last month or so, it’s become clear that the X-Men are not joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe anytime soon. While Marvel Studios doesn't seem to be interested in introducing the mutants to the world of the Avengers, 20th Century Fox is looking confident enough to move forward on their own.
According to Le Journal de Montreal (via Den of Geek), the studio is getting ready to kick off filming for a new X-Men movie in May 2017. Production will take place in Montreal, where X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse were both filmed.
The report suggests that they’ve already set up a production office at the MELS Studios complex and expect to begin set construction in January. MELS President Michel Trudel has said that the production will occupy their Studios 2 and 3 for several months.
While the movie is described as "the seventh film in the X-Men series", we’re not sure whether it's the next mainstream X-Men movie. According to a report from early November, Fox was considering a soft reboot for the mainstream X-Men franchise, scripted by Simon Kinberg. While they reportedly intended to bring back Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult, Bryan Singer was not to be involved. It seems too early for that project to head into production.
The same report suggested that Josh Boone's The New Mutants would start filming in spring 2017. Boone has been working on the project since he was hired to write and direct back in May 2015, and various reports that have surfaced on the web clearly indicate that this movie is in a far more advanced stage than the mainstream X-Men movie.
