Captain America: Civil War is set to be one of the biggest movies of 2016 – in fact, it will probably become one of the most financially successful movies of all time – and that means a lot of people are currently talking about it.
When people talk, rumours inevitably start. While some of these turn out to be true, some are nothing short of ridiculous and are simply untrue. Remember the rumour about Spider-Man supposedly appearing Avengers: Age of Ultron? Remember the rumour about Iron Man supposedly heading off into space to join the Guardians of the Galaxy? Remember the rumour about Alexander Pierce supposedly being the Red Skull? All totally false.
With those in mind, it’s fair to say that the majority of rumours about Captain America: Civil War are nothing more than that – rumours. Here are ten of the craziest that have done the rounds on the internet since the film was announced (most of which have officially been debunked)…
Who Martin Freeman Might Be Playing
There have been some very crazy rumours about who Martin Freeman might be playing in Captain America: Civil War. While it still isn’t actually confirmed who he is playing, we can say with certainty that he isn’t playing everyone he’s been rumoured to be playing, which means some of the suggestions are ridiculous.
The likelihood is that Freeman will be playing either Henry Gyrich or Everett Ross – two characters from the comic books who could potentially be involved with the Sokovia Accords – but some of the other suggestions have been a little more out there.
People have suggested he could be Edward Chase – the British Prime Minister – based solely on the fact that Ulysses Klaue said the word “Minister” on the telephone in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It has also been wildly suggested that he could play Norman Osborn, M.O.D.O.K. or even a returning Red Skull.
Members Of Daredevil’s Cast Will Appear
For a while, there were rumours circulating that certain members of the cast of Marvel’s Netflix show Daredevil would be appearing in Captain America: Civil War.
Specifically, Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil himself – played by Charlie Cox – and Wilson Fisk AKA the Kingpin – played by Vincent D’Onofrio – were touted as having roles in the movie, but these rumours have been categorically debunked.
In fact, Charlie Cox recently stated in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that he doubts the character will even appear in the massive Avengers: Infinity War movies in 2018 and 2019 respectively. He even claimed that the character might be recast if he was to appear, as he believes that Marvel consider their television and movie universes to be vastly different to each other.
The Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Will Appear
There have been many rumours – just like there were prior to Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron – that the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be appearing in Captain America: Civil War.
This seems extremely unlikely, as the Avengers still don’t know Phil Coulson is alive, the television and movie universes of Marvel have been kept very separate to each other, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will undoubtedly have its own episode devoted to the events of Captain America: Civil War, without actually utilising any of its lead characters.
It’s wishful thinking on the parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fans – and it would be very cool to see the likes of Daisy and Mack in a movie – but it’s very unlikely to happen any time soon.
She-Hulk Will Appear
The cast of characters in Captain America: Civil War is already huge. The likes of Spider-Man, Black Panther and Baron Zemo will all be making their first appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the movie, joining a huge existing cast, so there’s really no need for more additions – especially not when it comes to heroes.
However, rumours have been circulating that a certain female version of the Hulk – She-Hulk AKA Jennifer Walters, of course – will be appearing in the movie.
It sounds like a rumour with no basis whatsoever and is probably the product of a fanboy’s imagination gone wild. She-Hulk absolutely will not be appearing in Captain America: Civil War – and she probably won’t appear in the MCU any time soon – as cool as it would be if she actually was.
It’s Actually A Secret Wars Movie
Undoubtedly the most ludicrous rumour to have done the rounds about Captain America: Civil War, some people have suggested that it will in fact be an adaptation of the Secret Wars comic book story arc.
Of course, there have actually been two versions of this story – one in 1985 and one in 2015 – both of which have similar (though not identical premises). The general, crude description of each story is that a bunch of heroes are taken to a place called “Battleworld” (a world in a pocket dimension created solely for fighting on) by a higher power and forced to fight each other.
Why a movie about the Secret Wars story/stories would be entitled “Civil War” is anybody’s guess, so it’s crazy to think a rumour started about that being the case!
Giant-Man Will Appear
This particular rumour isn’t that crazy on the face of it – the Ant-Man movie showed that the ability to make things grow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe does exist (look at the giant ant, the giant Thomas the Tank Engine and the giant dog biscuit, for example) – but an extension of the rumour is somewhat crazy.
You see, some people are suggesting that it will be Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym who will take on the form of Giant-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
There’s every chance that Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang might grow to giant proportions – Captain America’s team are so out-powered that they could really do with that happening, put it that way – but there’ll be no giant-sized Michael Douglas stomping around.
THREE Heroes Will Die
Captain America: Civil War will undoubtedly see some brutal battles taking place, but the fact is that it will take place between a large group of heroes – and Marvel Studios have been extremely reluctant to kill any heroes off in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise so far.
Quicksilver is the only Avenger to meet his demise to date – and he didn’t have time to build a rapport with fans, as he died in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which was his first appearance.
With that in mind, the fact that a rumour has circulated that suggests no less than THREE heroes will die in the movie is definitely nothing short of ludicrous. While there may finally be the death of a major, established hero, killing three off in one foul swoop just isn’t going to happen.
The Real Mandarin & The Ten Rings Will Be Involved
There have been a number of rumours doing the rounds about the real Mandarin and his Ten Rings group being involved in the events of Captain America: Civil War. But this seems unlikely.
The real Mandarin was indeed confirmed to exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the Marvel One-Shot All Hail the King, but he’s more likely to appear in an Iron Man standalone movie in the future – if indeed another one is ever made.
The rumours suggested that he might be working alongside HYDRA – who don’t even exist any more, as far as the movies are concerned – and Baron Zemo, helping to enforce the Sokovia Accords as a means of getting the Avengers to quarrel amongst themselves, but don’t hold your breath. There are enough major characters already in Captain America: Civil War, without another major villain appearing.
HYDRA Will Be Using The Tesseract To Bring Back Red Skull
A crazy rumour about Captain America: Civil War is that one of the subplots of the movie is going to be HYDRA using the Tesseract to bring back the Red Skull – apparently he’s been stranded on Jotunheim – in order for him to feature in future movies (with the general consensus being that he’d be revealed at the end).
However, considering the fact that the Tesseract ISN’T EVEN ON EARTH – it’s in Odin’s trophy room on Asgard – and that HYDRA don’t even exist any more as far as the movies are concerned, this seems very unlikely.
This just seems like wishful thinking on the part of the people who started the rumour. They’ve put two and two together and made five. It’s a Captain America movie, so Red Skull sprang to mind and they started wishful thinking. There’s no chance that the Tesseract will be involved in the Civil War movie.
Captain America Will Die
In the comic book version of the Civil War story arc, Steve Rogers AKA Captain America died – he was killed by Crossbones and a brainwashed Sharon Carter. However, this isn’t the comic book version of the story and Captain America is the titular character.
Rumours have persisted about his death, but it’s confirmed that Chris Evans’ character will return for the Avengers: Infinity War movies. Although resurrections do occur, the likelihood of Captain America dying in his own movie is basically zero.
His death may be teased – the movie may even end on a cliffhanger – but Captain America will absolutely survive this movie. There’s no doubt about that – rumours stating otherwise are simply crazy.
