Here’s When The MCU’s Multiverse Saga Officially Ends

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - Marvel Studios

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently in the midst of Phase 5, which will conclude with Thunderbolts next year. After that comes Phase 6, which will conclude with two different Avengers films in 2026 and 2027. All of this is happening inside of what’s been dubbed The Multiverse Saga. So, when does that saga end? We now have a clear answer, obvious thought it may be.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Streaming, Television and Animation at Marvel Studios, recently addressed the Multiverse Saga. Winderbaum is currently promoting Agatha All Along, which comes to Disney+ later this month. The executive made it pretty clear that Avengers: Secret Wars is going to serve as the end to this current MCU saga.

“I think that’s [what] Secret Wars is going to be, an amazing culmination to the saga, I think it’s going to make the journey feel like it was worthwhile.”

So that’s that. Joe and Anthony Russo are set to direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Robert Downey Jr., who previously played Iron Man in the MCU, is also going to play Doctor Doom in the films. The Russos previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. They will once again be brought in to close out a huge saga, just as they did with The Infinity Saga several years ago.

Before that happens, Marvel has four other movies on the calendar. Next up is Captain America: Brave New World in February. After that we’ve got Thunderbolts in May. Then comes The Fantastic Four in summer 2025. Lastly, there’s the long-awaited Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali. While the film is currently listed for November 2025, that is incredibly unlikely given that it doesn’t currently have a director.

After that, all eyes are on what comes next. Without the multiverse, where will Marvel turn? The most obvious answer is the X-Men. We’ve long been waiting for a reboot of the franchise ever since Disney purchased Fox in 2019. We recently got Deadpool & Wolverine, but that was more of a send-off for the Fox universe. In all likelihood, the mutants will be the next big thing for 2028 and beyond.

Here is the synopsis for Agatha All Along.

“In Agatha All Along, the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…”

Avengers: Secret Wars is currently set to hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
