It seems that moviegoers are yearning to explore how it feels good to be bad on the big screen! With just half a week remaining before it rolls into theaters, the forecast for David Ayer's Suicide Squad is looking better than ever!
According to The Wrap, the story of the team of the world's deadliest supervillains is now poised for a $130-$140 million opening weekend in North America.
The pre-release tracking figures from last week set its opening to $115 million, while the estimates of mid-July pointed to an opening around the $125 million mark. Warner Bros. is currently happy keeping their expectations a bit more conservative with an estimate of $125 million.
All of the different early tracking for Suicide Squad has clearly suggested one thing - the movie should have no trouble coming in ahead of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. The Marvel Cinematic Universe installment launched at $94.3 million in 2014 to become the record holder for biggest August opening ever. That's a milestone the David Ayer flick is likely to exceed with ease.
However, at this point, Suicide Squad is looking good enough to secure the third position in two lists. If it bags more than Deadpool's $132.4 million, the DC Extended Universe installment will become the third biggest superhero opening of 2016.
And if it creeps up even higher and crosses $135 million, then Finding Dory will have to find a way to move itself down to the fourth spot in the list of top openings of 2016!
Despite the superb projections, Suicide Squad doesn't seem to have a chance of beating Captain America: Civil War or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - the top two openings of 2016. And to expect the WORST HEROES EVER to beat the most loved superheroes - that's not even conceivable in fiction!
One thing we need to keep in mind, though, is that the reviews for the August 5 release will surface on the web tomorrow. That may affect the estimates. However, the reviews tend to affect a movie more significantly in the long run than on its opening weekend. But then again, nothing is set in stone yet!
