Suicide Squad Hits the $700 Million Mark

After the reviews came in, who would have thought that Suicide Squad would become a commercial success?

This summer has been plagued with underperforming movies at the box office. For that matter, this year, The Legend of Tarzan is considered a success, being one of the top 10 grossing movies of the summer. And it has made just a bit above $350 million worldwide, with better reviews from the critics (well, sort of). So Suicide Squad beat all odds, and is now the fourth highest grossing movie of the summer in the US.

And, again, this is unbelievable, especially if we take into consideration the huge drop Suicide Squad had from its first to its second weekend. The movie has grossed $307 million in the US thus far, and it has been in the top six movies at the box office for six weeks.

Another thing has also happened - the supervillain flick has grossed well beyond what Man of Steel did in 2013. The first movie of the DCEU grossed back then just $668 million worldwide. And, by the looks of it, Suicide Squad will remain in the top 10 for a couple more weeks.

At this moment, the David Ayer flick needs about $15 million more dollars to become the most successful movie of the DCEU in the US. That’s right - it will surpass Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in about three or four weeks. We have no doubt that the studio will keep Suicide Squad in the theaters until then.

When it comes to worldwide revenues, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice won't be beaten any time soon, since there is still a $175 million gap between it and the Squad.

I guess we can be certain about one thing at this point - Suicide Squad 2 will definitely happen.

However, here is a question: Can we say that Suicide Squad was so successful just because other offerings were pretty low this summer? What do you think?
