Even if it’s been clobbered by the critics, at this moment being 27% rotten, just like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad can now be considered a box office record breaker. And that’s because the David Ayer movie has doubled the record set by Guardians of the Galaxy, almost doubling what the Marvel movie made in its opening day. Thus, with $20.5 million on Thursday, it is almost certain that Suicide Squad will earn about $140 million by the time the weekend is over.
Furthermore, the movie is doing very well in the other markets, too, opening with about $8 million. If it doesn't sound impressive, we can also add that it had a bigger opening day than all of this year's comic book movies in countries such as Korea and France.
According to the analysts, Suicide Squad has to make around $750 million worldwide in order to break even. Thus, even though it cost about $75 million less than Batman v Superman, the movie will most likely struggle. And that is not just because of the poor reviews and the mixed reactions of the fans.
According to CBM, it is least likely for Suicide Squad to be released in China. Citing THR, the website says that the China Film Group hasn't even set a release date for Suicide Squad. And that in the context in which the group schedules major blockbusters a couple of months prior to their US release.
And this could be a big hiccup for David Ayer's movie.
Of course, Deadpool wasn't released in China and still managed to make more than $780 million. But that was thanks to its maximum effort and the great reviews. China would have helped it join the $1 billion club.
So what do you think?
