What does Paul Thomas Anderson have to do with superhero movies?
Any comic book adaptation has been looked with a sort of contempt by the more serious actors and directors. They just don't cut it in the eyes of these people. Superhero movies are meant to be just a distraction, they are meant just to provide a few hours of fun and no more - and some of us do believe that, even if there are some counterexamples, with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.
No comic book/superhero movies has been nominated to a major award, such as the Oscar for the best movie or best director, let alone winning some of these awards (sure thing, Heath Ledger has won posthumously an Oscar for supporting role, but then again"¦)
So what does Paul Thomas Anderson say?
Superhero movies have found a defender in Paul Thomas Anderson - who can be said to be one of the most overly-serious and overly-complicated directors in Hollywood. According to him, people who bash superhero movies should get a life - there is nothing wrong in wanting to just spend some time at a cinema enjoying some popcorn.
And he is obviously right. Over the course of years, Paul Thomas Anderson has given us movies like Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, The Master and, more recently, Inherent Vice. And these are movies for the aficionados. It can be said that his movies are for just a small percentage of the cinemagoers.
So what happens to the others?
Paul Thomas Anderson has nothing against superhero movies, since they provide the moviegoers with a different type of entertainment. And when it comes to movies and their genres, it cannot be said that one genre is superior to another.
Furthermore, the director himself said that he enjoys superhero movies. So, in a way, this doesn’t mean at all that a serious director (such as himself) is too tight for this kind of entertainment.
Here's an idea!
Granted, this is a far-fetched idea. However, given the fact that so many directors believed to be too serious for superhero movies and so many actors which seemed to pretentious to take such roles, maybe Paul Thomas Anderson could direct the next big thing from either Marvel either DC. And given the realism of DC"¦ Who knows?
This one director has proven time and time again that he can manage a large ensemble cast and that he can deliver some of the best movies of the past 20 years.
