Following his introductory cameo in this year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Jason Momoa's Aquaman is set to return next year in Justice League with his first significant role in the DC Extended Universe. And in 2018, he will come back again with his first standalone movie, which will have James Wan, director of Furious 7 and The Conjuring, behind the camera.
Despite the fact that there are still three DCEU installments to arrive before Aquaman, Warner Bros. seems to have made up their minds about where the movie's production will take place.
According to Australia's Daily Telegraph (via Cosmic Book News), the July 27, 2018 release will be filmed in their territory sometime in the next year. It will go into pre-production before this Christmas.
One of the interesting things about the report is that it claims that The Wire star Michael K. Williams has been cast as Aquaman's main antagonist, Black Manta.
We did come across a report few weeks back suggesting that Black Manta would be the big baddie in the movie, and we also saw the actor expressing his interest about playing the character.
However, the Australian outlet's report is the first to indicate that he has already joined Aquaman. So, the movie's director was more recently queried in Twitter about whether Michael K. Williams had been cast as Black Manta. Here's how James Wan responded to the question!
Nah, not real. https://t.co/pvqy1b3CnG

So, the director makes it clear that Williams hasn't been signed for the role as yet. But he does admit that the 49-year-old is a "terrific" actor! Here's what he says:
Agree. He’s a terrific actor. https://t.co/nF0cco4mCV

Whoever gets to play Black Manta will join the Aquaman movie's cast roster, which already includes Jason Momoa as the King of the Seven Seas and Amber Heard as Mera. Willem Dafoe's Vulko will return for the movie – unless he gets killed in Justice League!
