Justice League might be yet another divisive DC Extended Universe film, but it appears that everyone agrees that Ezra Miller's Flash is the best of the ensemble. That says a lot when you consider that critics have praised all of the cast members, both individually and as a whole.
It was announced some time ago that Flash's solo flick would be a Flashpoint adaptation. That made things interesting, and also raised some questions about the future of the DCEU, as Miller remarked that Flashpoint will tear the shared universe apart.
We had assumed that the Flash solo flick would lead Warner Bros. into making a soft reboot of the entire cinematic universe. Of the five movies made so far, only one was a critical success, which certainly adversely affected box office numbers and demonstrated that Zack Snyder's vision didn't work as well as the studio hoped it would.
Ezra Miller recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the Flash solo film and its impact on the DCEU. Apparently, fans who suspected a new type of shared universe was on the way were right:
What fans understand when they hear Flashpoint would be almost like hearing a word like Crisis. We start to understand that our precious DC universe will inevitably be torn asunder to an endless, headache-inducing fabric of multiversality. The DC Hyper-Extended Multiverse, as I plan to call it. Quote me!
Geoff Johns, who is now the creative mind of the cinematic universe, had this to say about Batman’s role in the Flashpoint:
There's elements in it that we're going to be playing into that we couldn't do anywhere else. The scale of it, the Batman story of it all (EW).
Of course, Warner Bros. needs to find a director for the project as soon as possible, because the Flashpoint should happen sooner rather than later. Besides touching off a soft reboot of the DCEU, introducing the idea of a Multiverse would also make way for individual projects that are unrelated to this extended universe.
Superman: Red Son, Joker's Origin story, and many other films could be included in this hyperextended universe, to use Miller’s term.
