Citing various reasons, Guillermo del Toro stepped down from the Justice League Dark director’s chair, but it appeared that the studio found an even better director in Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow). The studio then announced that Justice League Dark is considered a priority, raising fans’ expectations, but we’ve heard nothing since.
Until now, that is! Although he left the superhero movie Gambit to join Justice League Dark, Liman has decided to step down from that movie so he can focus on yet another project (Chaos Walking, the first in a young adult science fiction series that reportedly stars Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley). However, it’s safe to assume that he had other reasons, as well.
So we can add Justice League Dark to the list of DC Extended Universe movies with production issues. Variety broke the news, which was then picked up by other news outlets.
The Hollywood Reporter said that the studio had already started searching for a replacement director. Of the individuals they’ve contacted, Andrés Muschietti is the main contender for the job. Muschietti directed Mama, and is working on the upcoming reboot of It.
Other than that, we’ve learned that Michael Gilio is working on the Justice League Dark script, and Scott Rudin is producing.
Based on all of this, it appears that Warner Bros. is back to Square One with this movie. Before Liman's departure from the project, it was rumored that Justice League Dark would be based on Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Deadman, and Etrigan the Demon.
It remains to be seen whether this roster will change or remain as is.
