Many DC comic book movie fans still believe that Ben Affleck has been the best actor to play Batman/Bruce Wayne, but his future as the iconic character appears to be uncertain. The actor's disappointment in his character as portrayed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was more than obvious in the weeks before and after the movie’s release. Even as he denied it right up until the end, he ultimately stepped down as director of the Batman reboot.
On top of all that, Justice League underperformed at the box office and with the critics. So it will be interesting to see what Affleck’s next steps will be in regard to his role as the DC Extended Universe’s Batman.
During an interview with Daily Sabah, the actor talked about how his character has changed from one movie to the next. He went on to say that the Justice League version, with his new sense of humor, is more to his liking than the previous versions. Affleck was unsure about the extent of his future involvement in the shared universe, but he said that he enjoyed working on the projects and liked the people he worked with.
So, really, there’s nothing new so far. However, Affleck did say that he would still like to direct a Batman film, and implied that he gave up his directorial duties for the previous project because he wasn't happy with the script:
For me, it’s interesting, and I always evaluate this stuff on the merit of the material. I want to direct a Batman movie, and I never got a script that I was happy with, so they are starting over and writing another script. And right now, I think there are a lot of different possibilities for the way the DC Universe could go, and I will just follow my interests in pursuing that. And I know that I love working with this group of people, and it was a real joy for me to make this movie.
Matt Reeves is currently attached to direct the Batman reboot, and we’ve heard rumors that he’s ready to cast a new Bruce Wayne/Dark Knight. The project’s release date remains a mystery.
And now, Flashpoint is on the way. In fact, Ezra Miller has said that production should begin soon. The movie will serve as a soft reboot of the entire franchise, and it’s likely that it will be our last chance to see Affleck play the Caped Crusader.
