Earlier this week, we were all bamboozled by a fake interview of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice production designer. That was claimed to have been collected from a French magazine. However, we now have another French magazine that has interviewed the Batman of DC Extended Universe, Ben Affleck. This one isn't bogus!
The interview has been published in the December issue of Studio Ciné Live (via Batman News). While talking to the interviewer, Ben Affleck claimed that he doesn't want to "˜COMPETE' or "˜EMULATE' the earlier incarnations of Batman. He was actually asked if he has analyzed Christian Bale's version of the character to distinguish himself. The actor explained:
"Christopher Nolan used his Batman to tell a finite story. My version is different, but remains faithful to the Batman mythology and all the themes associated with it."
Affleck added that the Batman of Dark Knight Trilogy belonged to a universe where other superheroes didn't exist. But his version of the character does exist in such a universe. Here's what he said:
"Here - because we're working towards the Justice League - there's Superman, and it's a world populated with super beings. This situation generates an altogether new reality."
See, Ben Affleck is NOT Slade Wilson and Bale is no longer BATMAN - proved again!
Batman's Reasoning – Not a Straightforward Search for Justice!
Ben Affleck has shared more on how his incarnation of the Caped Crusader is different from the previous ones. But most of it is what we have heard before - the AGE factor! Affleck described:
"Usually, the films show Batman starting off, or in the prime of his career. Here, you're dealing with an older version, a guy at the end of his journey."
The actor went on to claim that the conflict with Superman – whom he considers "˜an existential menace' - helps his Batman "˜find meaning in his own life'. Affleck added:
"Moreover, past incarnations dealt with a straightforward search for justice. This time, Batman's reasoning is clouded by frustration, bitterness and anger."
More Indulged in Playboy Lifestyle than Previous Bruce Waynes!
In Christopher Nolan's Batman film series, we saw Bruce Wayne taking on the billionaire playboy persona to make sure that nobody suspects that he is the crime fighting vigilante. However, that's not the case for Ben Affleck's version. What is it then? According to the actor:
"We also play a bit more with the billionaire playboy side of the character. He lives that life at full tilt. He courts many women, owns many cars, and parties a lot. He does that as a way to fill the void in his soul."
This reminds me of the SENSUALITY part of why Batman V Superman got PG 13! But again, it's PG 13, not R-Rated!
Lex Luthor - Most Interesting Character in Batman V Superman!
In the interview, Ben Affleck was asked why he would consider Jesse Eisenberg's character the right pick as the villain of the movie. This is when he said:
"Luthor is, for me, the most interesting character in the film."
Well, before saying that he praised the writer Chris Terrio as well as the actor Eisenberg. He called the combination to be the "˜meeting of two great minds' who have the "˜same wave length'. He also described the character as "˜radically different' from the previous incarnations and "˜grounded in reality'. And after saying that he went on to compare Lex Luthor with Heath Ledger's version of The Joker! Here's what Affleck said:
"This type of film is only as good as its villain. That's why The Dark Knight was so brilliant, because of Heath Ledger's Joker."
Affleck also praised the actor by saying that he "˜improves' Batman V Superman with each scene he's in. He concluded:
"He's not your usual one-dimensional villain, there's a whole psychology behind him."
Not everyone is impressed with Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor at the moment. But, hoping that Ben Affleck's words come true!
