Parker Young in the Running to Play Shazam!

A couple of weeks ago, we heard that John Cena and Joshua Sasse (Galavant) were frontrunners for the lead role in Shazam! Of course, we’ve had no official confirmation of this, but after that report surfaced, audition tapes for the roles of Billy Batson and Shazam! popped up online, bringing with them a number of reveals.

We can't be sure that the dialogue from the tapes will actually turn up in the movie, but one tape does reveal an important detail about Shazam. Based on the tape’s content, it’s reasonable to say that Billy Batson's kid mentality is going to inhabit the fully grown, superpowered body of Shazam.

Of course, this isn't even the biggest reveal of them all, but it does indicate that we can expect some laughs in the scenes in which Batson attempts to figure out how to operate a full-grown body.

The audition tape in question was submitted by Parker Young, who’s no stranger to comic book adaptations (via CBM). The actor appeared in ten episodes of Arrow as Alex David, and ultimately became an antagonist on the show.

His tape also name-dropped Batman, which means that Shazam will certainly be connected with the rest of the DC Extended Universe. But we’re not going to hold our breath on that, because it’s likely that this audition tape dialogue isn’t going to make it into the finished product.

Do you think Parker Young is right for the lead role of Shazam? At five feet, eleven inches, he’s a bit short. During an encounter with Black Adam, he would be dwarfed by the six-foot, five-inch Dwayne Johnson!

Shooting for Shazam! is scheduled to begin in February 2018, so David F. Sandberg still has plenty of time to pick the right actor for the lead role!
