Aquaman: Nicole Kidman Talks Atlanna

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman has had a phenomenal year. The actress followed her starring role in HBO's critically acclaimed Big Little Lies with three movies that were screened and nominated at the Cannes Film Festival (How to Talk to Girls at Parties, The Beguiled, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer). We predict that in the future, her winning streak will continue and her star will shine brighter than ever, especially since she’s set to appear in yet another high-profile movie next year.

Of course, that movie is Aquaman, and the actress will portray Arthur Curry’s mother, Queen Atlanna. Aquaman will also be the actress’s first superhero movie since Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (so it can be said that it’s her first role in an actual superhero movie).

However, this isn't the first time a studio has courted Kidman for such a role. In 2015, Patty Jenkins tried to convince her to star as a high-ranking Amazon in Wonder Woman. However, their discussions ended without result.

So why would Nicole Kidman take on this specific DC Extended Universe role? The fact that James Wan is a fellow Australian played an important part, especially since the director is now shooting the movie in their home country. However, the novelty of the character also attracted the experienced actress.

Kidman told Deadline that she trusts James Wan, and the thought of playing a female warrior sealed the deal:

Well, James Wan is Australian, and he's a friend of mine. I think he's going to make an amazing movie. We've always circled each other, so when he came to me, I was like, “James, I'll do anything for you.” When he said “female warrior from the sea” who wears mother of pearl, I went, “Yes. Female warrior from the sea. Me like.”

Of course, James Wan is already juggling a number of characters, so the actual scope of Kidman’s role remains to be seen. But if Aquaman turns out to be anything like Wonder Woman, we’re excited about seeing Atlanna follow in the footsteps of Connie Nielsen's Queen Hippolyta and kick some butt!
