Man of Steel 2: J.A. Bayona Wants to Direct

While Man of Steel was the first movie in the DCEU, it still hasn’t received a sequel. What was supposed to be the second installment in the franchise transformed into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, after Zack Snyder’s idea for a Man of Steel post-credits scene was rejected.

Last year, after Suicide Squad’s release, Warner Bros. announced that the studio was fast-tracking a Man of Steel sequel. Furthermore, it was also announced that Zack Snyder wouldn’t return in the director’s chair. And, until now, we only had rumors about who might be up for the task. Among those rumored, names like J.J. Abrams and George Miller have popped up the most often.

But there are other directors out there, and some of them are Superman fans. One of these directors is J.A. Bayona, who directed The Impossible back in 2012 and the critically acclaimed A Monster Calls in 2016 (released in the US on the 6th of January). According to the director, the first Christopher Reeve Superman flick was the one that defined his career:

The first movie I saw in my life was Superman. I was three years old. The first memory I had was Christopher Reeve flying in the suit. Directing a Superman film would be great. I always wanted to be Superman. That's the film that made me want to become a director. Superman was the first one I saw in my life and defines my whole career (via CBM).

So is he up for the task? He may be. However, for the time being, he must be busy with the Jurassic World sequel, which is due in 2018. And since Warner Bros. said it’s fast-tracking Man of Steel 2, Bayona doesn’t really have time.

For the moment, there is no release date for Man of Steel 2.
