There’s been much speculation about which actresses would be best as Poison Ivy and Catwoman alongside Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn in Gotham City Sirens. Fans have proposed countless names, with Jessica Chastain’s appearing at the top of many fans' Poison Ivy wishlists. But is the star of Zero Dark Thirty and The Martian interested? Apparently she is.
During a recent interview, Cinema Blend asked Chastain whether she would consider playing the iconic Batman nemesis in David Ayer's upcoming female-driven DC Extended Universe installment. Her response:
I’m interested in all things where the characters are strong and dynamic, and not stereotypes or objects. I like female characters that are subjects, not objects. And so, if Poison Ivy happens to be that, sure. Throw my hat in the ring.
Comic book fans know that Poison Ivy is no damsel in distress. She might not be a superhero, but she’s a strong, badass character, and one of the most enduring Caped Crusader foes. It’s hard to imagine Jessica Chastain passing on an offer to play the notorious eco-terrorist, should the role come her way.
The two-time Academy Award nominee has appeared in close to two dozen movies to date, but she’s never portrayed a comic book character. She was close to starring in Iron Man 3, but eventually had to pass due to scheduling conflicts. In 2014, Chastain told The Guardian:
I would love to do a superhero movie"¦The problem is, if I do a superhero movie, I don't want to be the girlfriend. I don't want to be the daughter. I want to wear a fucking cool costume with a scar on my face, with fight scenes. That's what I'd love.
