James Gunn's Guardians of The Galaxy 2 is set to release May 5th, 2017. The venture is well kept under wraps, but the director has graced us with a great many details about the sequel. Granted, they don't necessarily go to the essence of what's coming down in GotG2.
James Gunn maintains his relation to the audience via his social media accounts. He’s become famous for his impromptu yet most revealing Q&A sessions.
Screen Rant and Movie Pilot had the patience to follow these sessions and pointed out the most exciting news about the upcoming GotG2.
James Gunn completed the script
As you can see, June 2nd was a great day for GotG2 fans. The first draft was completed. James Gunn's comment goes like this (via Movie Pilot):
"There was nine months of treatment writing before I even started on the draft. That’s the hardest work in many ways."
Which means: "MOST of my writing is done while writing a scriptment – which, in this case, took months and months. It’s seventy pages long – the majority of a script, with every beat and even a lot of dialogue. I then turn that into a script, which is written in screenplay format, with scenes, etc. What I’ve been doing the last 48 days is turning the scriptment into a screenplay."
And it has to be good. How do we know? Chris Pratt himself confessed the script moved him to tears. And Gunn corroborates: "He cried when I told him the story I was about to write".
GotG2 will see the return of the main cast
Indeed, you can take that off your chest: GotG2 will see the main cast returning. So Chris Pratt will reprise Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana will come back as Gamora, Dave Bautista will deliver Drax again, and Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper will do voiceover for Groot and Rocket respectively.
In James Gunn's words "Yes, the main cast is all coming back, along with a few others from the first film". One of the "few others" also include Sean Gunn, who will portray Kraglin for the 2nd time.
New characters will be added
And that is also a relief. It's on this occasion that Gunn finally revealed - but did he? - who's the newly introduced Guardian. We previously took our shot here, but it seems James Gunn thought of someone else.
"Thanoscopter is the new Guardian". But is he joking? I surely think so. The guys at Movie Pilot seem to be certain the director is pulling our leg. What say you?
What is, however, solid, is GotG2 will reveal Peter Quill's father. And Gunn puts it clearly: "We will see Star-Lord’s father in this movie".
As to his identity, it won't pull from the comics, as Gunn previously announced. What we can state is despite the fact we don't know who he is, we also know who he is not.
So, no J’son of Spartax to play the father figure for Peter Quill. Gunn's explanation for distorting the book: "Yeah, he’s unappealing to me. First of all, his name is J’son".
Also, Gunn has no idea - or he pretends - about who is going to portray the yet to be revealed father of Star Lord. But could Al Pacino grab the role, as we previously speculated, and mostly given to the fact Gunn himself confessed Al Pacino is the one actor he'd like most to work with?
Well, read what you will into this, but I'm not ready to dismiss this theory until proven wrong. However, that doesn't put an end to the character talk.
Some rumored characters will not be added
And we should start with the Hulk. "They will not team up with Hulk", says Gunn. And that surely scratches GotG2 of the list of possible movies the Green Goliath might appear next.
However, that's not all. Bad news keeps pouring: "There are no characters owned by Fox (like the Thing) in the movie", as James Gunn reveals.
So if you thought of a spectacular cameo in GotG2, you can now rest assured this is not going to happen if it concerns characters that Marvel has no rights on.
Also, keep in mind "["¦] we actually have less characters in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 than we have in Guardians of the Galaxy 1 because everything is just getting too sprawling and too crazy for me in these superhero comic book movies". All that in spite of the fact a new Guardian will be added.
Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is in place
Everybody knows how important soundtracks are for a movie, establishing tones like they do, helping the audience to really grasp director's intentions. Given the success of the first movie and soundtrack, questions about an Awesome Mix Vol. 2 started to pile up.
Fortunately, James Gunn has already compiled one: "There is an Awesome Mix Vol. 2 in the second movie, yes". And I bet it's going to rock the heck out of the sequel! ‘Cause it surely made an impression on Chris Pratt!
So, there you have it: the latest about GotG2 straight from James Gunn! Any thoughts, guys? Do you think they’ll hire Al Pacino for the role of Peter Quill's father? Any guesses about the new Guardian?
