James Gunn Confirms Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Timeline

So far, no release date has been announced for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and no plot details have been made public. Since Adam Warlock was teased at the end of the last movie, it’s safe to assume that he’ll show up in GotG3. In addition, Dave Bautista recently confirmed that he’ll be back in spite of what happened in Infinity War.

There’s been quite a bit of back-and-forth talk about where Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will fall along the MCU timeline. At the end of Infinity War, Rocket Raccoon and Nebula were the only Guardians left alive, and the Russo Brothers had confirmed that the characters who died wouldn’t be resurrected. This led fans to assume that the three-quel was going to take place in the four years between Vol. 2 and Infinity War.

But James Gunn recently took to Twitter to clear up the confusion. In response to a fan’s question, the director indicated that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 takes place after Infinity War. Gunn had made similar comments prior to the Russos’ comments.

The idea that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 might be a prequel isn't really that far-fetched, especially since Ant-Man and the Wasp will be set before Infinity War and Captain Marvel (which will introduce the MCU’s new leader) will be a ’90s piece.

Did Gunn’s tweet spoil the suspense in any way? Not really. Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is ready to start production, despite the character's fate in Infinity War. And a Black Panther sequel almost has to happen after the first film was so monstrously successful film.

The Russos can say all they want about the characters lost in Infinity War, but we find it hard to believe that the MCU will continue on without its newest members.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is expected to be released sometime in 2020 (after Spider-Man: Homecoming 2).
