A couple of new details about the planned Han Solo Star Wars Anthology Film emerged over the weekend. The first bit of news concerns the casting announcement for one of the main characters, while the second concerns the film’s plot. Obviously, there is still a long time to wait until the movie arrives - but, as the world of the movies spins, 2018 can be said to be just around the corner.
The first piece of news concerns the casting of Lando Calrissian, portrayed in The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi by Billy Dee Williams. Donald Glover (Creed, The Martian, Spider-Man: Homecoming) was cast in the role, with the announcement being made by Lucasfilm. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller released a statement, in which they praise the young actor:
We're so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us…These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we'd like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.
As far as the plot of the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology Film is concerned, The Hollywood Reporter says that it will feature the relationship between Han Solo and Lando. The movie will also present how Lando lost the Millennium Falcon during a game of “Corellian Spike” sabacc (via CBM).
It is unlikely, though, that the entire movie will revolve around their friendship.
The story of how Lando lost the Millennium Falcon has been told in the Star Wars Expanded Universe before. However, besides the mention from The Empire Strikes Back, this will be the first time it will be detailed on the big screen.
