Gambit was originally scheduled for a 2016 release, but here we are in 2017, and the movie still hasn’t gone into production because of script issues and the loss of two directors. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) were each deemed perfect to direct Gambit when they were hired, but then each decided to move on, citing a variety of reasons.
Most recently, Channing Tatum, who’s been set to star as Gambit from day one, said that the success of movies such as Deadpool and Logan prompted the studio to have Joshua Zetumer (Robocop) rewrite the script. All that remains is for a third director to be found so the casting process can begin once again.
According to Deadline, 20th Century Fox is looking at director Gore Verbinski for Gambit. Verbinski is best known for his billion-dollar Pirates of the Caribbean movies, but he also directed The Ring and The Weather Man.
But don’t get your hopes up too high. Deadline added that Verbinski is just in the early phase of negotiations. When all’s said and done, it could go either way. For the moment, the director has started work on a new project called Spaceless.
To add to all of this, Tatum also has several projects on the horizon, including a rumored starring role in the Van Helsing reboot. So, even if the studio signs a director and cast members are signed for Gambit, it’s likely that the mutant’s fans will have to wait a couple more years until the movie is released.
