Last month, we told you about several major Gambit updates after the movie had been stuck in development hell for more than three years. A more recent story has reassured us that the project really has been revitalized.
According to Variety, Masters of Sex star Lizzy Caplan is in negotiation with 20th Century Fox to star opposite Channing Tatum in Gambit. While the outlet didn’t offer any details about her character, it’s probably safe to assume that it's Bella Donna Boudreaux.
Léa Seydoux had landed the role in 2015 after Rupert Wyatt signed on to direct. But as time passed, we grew doubtful about Seydoux's involvement. When Wyatt and his replacement, Doug Liman, both left the project, we were fairly sure Seydoux was gone, too.
A leaked audition tape of Ali Rodney apparently reading for the role of Bella Donna confirmed our suspicion that Seydoux was no longer a part of Gambit. However, the character is still present in the latest draft of Josh Zetumer’s script.
In addition to the Showtime period drama, Caplan starred in the big-screen ventures Cloverfield, Hot Tub Time Machine, and Now You See Me 2. You may have missed her first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance as Claire Wise in Item 47, a Marvel One-Shot that was included with the home media release of The Avengers.
With Gore Verbinski at the helm, Gambit should kick off production in the near future to meet its February 14, 2019 release date. According to a new Omega Underground report, the X-Men spin-off is currently scouting New Orleans filming locations under the working title of Forevermore. The project’s working title had been previously reported as Chess.
