Dr. Doom Solo Movie in Development at Fox

There have already been a number of news items from San Diego Comic Con, but the latest might be the biggest surprise yet, in the vein of Sony’s Venom solo movie announcement.

As the SDCC Legion panel concluded, Noah Hawley (creator of Legion and Fargo) announced that he’s currently working on a new project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s a full-length live-action movie about Doctor Doom, who is one of Marvel's most recognizable villains. The same source reported that Hawley is writing the script and also plans to direct the movie.

Hawley wrote and produced Legion and Fargo, and he directed a couple of episodes of each. But he has no additional experience as a director, so he'll need to come up with a pretty good pitch to persuade 20th Century Fox to hire him to direct the Doctor Doom film.

That pitch will have to be especially good, considering how Doctor Doom’s previous film appearances have been received. Fans weren’t thrilled with the way he was portrayed in the Fantastic Four flicks.

This news follows the recent rumor that Fox is still working to get a Fantastic Four movie off the ground after the previous reboot failed to meet expectations. But this could be the right approach: Build the character first, then have him as a familiar villain in a Fantastic Four reboot.

So far, these are the only details we have about this planned project, but we’re sure we'll hear something new in the near future.
