Crossbones played an essential role in the conclusion of the comic books’ Civil War storyline, but he didn't even get to see the MCU event begin. Of course, he was instrumental in triggering the Sokovian Accords, which led to the actual Civil War, but that's about it. From this point of view, the cinematic universe downplayed his role. Also, Crossbones' exit was a disappointment for the fans.
After Captain America: Civil War came out, Crossbones actor Frank Grillo teased the possibility of his return to the MCU. He said that the studio had approached him about a comeback, but he didn't agree to the deal. He also said that audiences didn't see Crossbones' body, although the villain had been blown up with his own bomb.
At that time, it appeared that Grillo was still trying to hype the movie, as he did when he said that his character could beat the Hulk. But, according to the most recent news, the actor was actually telling the truth.
During a Forbes interview about the Purge franchise, Grillo remarked that he had three children who were Marvel fans, so it felt great to be a part of the Marvel family. But the actor also said that there’s some news about Crossbones that no one’s aware of:
It’s great to be part of Marvel, too, and I have three boys who are fanatical about Marvel. And I was surprised not too long ago, because there is some news that nobody knows yet, to do with my character, that’s going to be really interesting, and I’m excited about that.
At this point, we don't know what news Frank Grillo was talking about. But with the rumors that Thanos will alter reality and essentially reset the MCU during the Infinity War, we can assume that Frank Grillo will return to the shared universe in the still-untitled Avengers 4.
What do you think? Would you like to see Crossbones return?
