The Robots in Disguise are still very popular, it seems. Particularly amongst fans of the classic versions of the Autobots and Decepticons. As evidence of that, Skybound’s new massive Transformers comic book collection just shattered a record on Kickstarter.
According to Bleeding Cool, The Transformers Compendium Set raised more than $1.8 million in pledges in just one day. The project met its initial funding goal in just two minutes. The previous record holder was Skybound and Hasbro’s GI Joe: A Real American Hero Compendium Set, which launched to $933,000 in its first day. That book ended up raising $3.7 million in total. The Kickstarter, which you can check out here, has raised $1.94 million as of this writing.
The set that Skybound is putting together is truly comprehensive. It collects the entire original run of Transformers comics from both the U.S. and U.K. Skybound and Image are releasing a compendium collecting the original Marvel Transformers comics this year. That book, however, is not nearly as thorough as this admittedly impressive collection.
“This campaign is a celebration of Transformers history,” said Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound. “With two different reading experiences to choose from, there’s truly something for every kind of Transformers fan, from casual to hardcore.”
Here is a description of the Transformers Compendium Set.
“Fans can enjoy eight total books, including the two U.S. and two U.K. compendium sets, and exclusive The Transformers: Til All Are One Box Set, which intercuts the U.S. and U.K. runs into the most seamless and comprehensive reading experience yet. This edition houses four hardcovers in a deluxe collector’s box with new art from current Transformers series cover artist and comics megastar Daniel Warren Johnson.
Choose your side! Backers who pledge The Transformers: Til All Are One Box Set will choose between Autobot or Decepticon editions—or both!”
There’s an awful lot going on right now for fans of Optimus Prime and the gang. For one, Skybound launched the shared Energon Universe in 2023, with the new Transformers and G.I. Joe comics firmly existing in the same continuity. Those books have been selling incredibly well. It offered a new jumping-on point for readers, a move that has paid off handsomely.
On the movie side of things, last year’s animated Transformers One wasn’t the success Paramount and Hasbro hoped it would be. However, Paramount is currently putting together a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie, with Chris Hemswoth (Thor) attached to star. No word yet on when that one might hit theaters, but 2023’s Rise of the Beasts did some work to help set it up.
The Transformers Compendium Set does not currently have a release date.
