Civil War: Box Office Tracking

In just a couple of weeks, Civil War will kick off the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And this is the MCU’s most important phase, because it will culminate with the biggest confrontation of them all: everybody against Thanos.

But, before that moment arrives, the Avengers will battle between themselves in Captain America: Civil War, which will also conclude the Captain America trilogy. Can we hope that it will perform in the same way the MCU’s other big trilogy did? Or are there actually chances that Civil War will outperform Iron Man 3 ($174 million in the opening weekend and $1.2 billion dollars worldwide)?

As with any Marvel event, we can be certain of one thing: that it will be Number One during its opening weekend. Furthermore, given the rave reviews it received when screened for the critics, we can expect that it will have long legs, longer than anybody could have expected.

According to THR, Civil War is expected to make around $175 million in the US during its opening weekend, an amount that dwarfs the debuts of the previous Captain America films (which stood at $65 million and $95 million). It’s safe to assume that the addition of almost the entire Avengers roster to the film is responsible for these predictions. Of course, some might say that these estimates are a bit too conservative - after all, Disney and Marvel have proved quite a few times that, when it comes to events such as this one, they can always deliver. And that’s why some believe that Civil War will make much more than expected during its opening weekend.

Regardless of whether it makes $175 million (the fifth-highest opening in history) or more than $220 million (the second-highest opening weekend), it’s safe to assume that this will be the main event among superhero movies in 2016.

Civil War will debut on May 6 – it’s safe to say that everybody will be there.
