Thus far, although Kevin Feige teased an announcement quite a while ago, no definitive news has popped up for the Captain Marvel movie. And that’s despite the fact that Joss Whedon intended to introduce her at the end of Age of Ultron.
The most recent rumors had it that indie director Emily Carmichael was close to signing a deal with Marvel. This rumor came in combination with another, saying that the director shares a first name with the lead actress (obviously, everybody was thinking Emily Blunt). Of course, those were just rumors.
However, the most recent reports (or rumors, since no official announcement has been made) say differently. According to We Got This Covered, Marvel has already met with a female director and is close to signing a deal with her. She is Elizabeth Wood, best known for White Girl (a movie that could not be more different from what Marvel is currently doing). According to the website, her husband, Gabriel Nussbaum, brokered the deal, and Marvel intends to bring him aboard as well.
We’ve said that White Girl couldn’t be any more different from Marvel’s projects thus far, being a coming of age story that heavily featured sex scenes and drug use. However, this is one of the reasons why Marvel has proved so successful: They choose movie directors from different genres. The Russos are the best example of this.
Obviously, as mentioned previously, this should be regarded as a rumor. And, although it might contradict the previous rumors (especially the one about Carmichael, a director whose movies have been both comic and sci-fi oriented), it should be taken into account - especially if Captain Marvel is set to be an origin story (in other words, a coming of age movie).
