If you know Tim Burton just for movies like Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland, than you should know that he is the one that basically started the whole superhero genre.
You might believe that Ben Affleck will do a poor job as the Dark Knight, even if the film hasn't even seen a trailer, based on the performance of Christian Bale, who was also the first one to portray the Caped Crusader for three times in a live-action film. But to some others Bale isn't the definitive Batman.
Instead, the definitive Batman/Bruce Wayne is Michael Keaton, who starred in Tim Burton's Batman and Batman returns.
What does Tim Burton have to say?
Tim Burton's criticism seems to be aimed directly at Marvel, the studio that has found the right formula for superhero movies and has already released 10 movies in the last 6 years (and with a full slate for the future).
But while the formula was found, the director also says that the studio cannot continue for much longer in this direction, because people might get tired of this (point where Tim Burton is about right).
However, we have seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is clearly different from other Marvel movies, which seems to indicate a shift in the style. Or this is at least what some people might say.
Is this what the director means?
Not necessarily. Tim Burton also said that his Dark Knight films were seen as being too, well, dark - however, after about 20 years, they seem to be light-hearted. So the path taken by The Winter Soldier isn't necessarily a counterargument.
Tim Burton also said that, at some point (and some of us say that pretty soon) people will just get tired of seeing the same psychology in superheroes.
It is kind of funny, in a way, because Tim Burton is actually right - all the characters we have seen until now are troubled individuals, damaged to some degree. And if Tim Burton wants to make a movie about a happy superhero (and he says that his days as a director of superhero movies aren’t over), then we are certain that the moviegoers will flock to see that film.
