Taika Waititi to Direct Marvel’s Thor 4, Putting WB’s Akira On Hold

Taika Waititi and Chris Hemsworth at San Diego Comic-Con

It was just confirmed that Taika Waititi will be writing and directing Thor 4.

Waititi directed Thor: Ragnarok, bringing a new energy to the Thor series. Many fans will be very pleased to hear that he is returning for Thor's next chapter.

Waititi is a Jewish-Maori filmmaker from New Zealand whose work has been greatly growing in popularity over recent years.

Before working on Ragnarok, Waititi was best known for the series What We Do In the Shadows (a 2014 half-hour mokumentary horror comedy that Waititi wrote, directed, and starred in along with Jermain Clement), and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (a 2016 adventure comedy-drama written and directed by Waititi).

Thor: Ragnarok took Waititi's career to new heights, and for good reason. Ragnarok was incredibly witty, fun, and exciting, even when compared to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is saying a lot.

Fans seemed to enjoy Waititi's work on Ragnarok as well, with the film bringing in $854 million in sales worldwide, greatly surpassing the sales from Thor ($449.3 million) and Thor: The Dark World ($644.6 million). Ragnarok also earned a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Previous to signing the deal to direct Thor 4, Waititi had been working on the Warner Bros. adaptation of the Japanese manga Akira.

The Akira film had already experienced significant delays, but now that Waititi is going to be working on Thor 4, Akira is likely to be put on hold for a while longer.

Warner Bros. acquired the rights to Akira in 2002, and it seems that fans of the manga will have to hold on a while longer for the live-screen adaptation.

Waititi's next work to hit the big screen is Jojo Rabbit, a dark comedy drama based on the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens.

Jojo Rabbit stars Scarlett Johansson and Waititi portrays an imaginary version of Adolf Hitler, as seen by a young boy named Jojo "Rabbit" Betzler (played by Roman Griffin Davis). Jojo Rabbit will be released on October 18, 2019.

Waititi just signed the deal to work on Thor 4, so we don't know much about the movie yet. Chris Hemsworth is expected to return to the film as Thor, but even that hasn't been made official.

Thor has been through so much loss and hardship since his last solo movie, Thor: Ragnarok.

Although we don't know anything about the plot or of Thor 4 yet, it will be interesting to see what Marvel (and Waititi) have in store for Thor next.

Hopefully now that Waititi is officially on board for the film, it won't be too much longer before we can start to get some more information about the plot and cast.

Thor fans are not sure what this news means for the upcoming about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, since release dates have not been confirmed for Thor or Guardians.

Since Thor ended Endgame by taking off with Star-Lord, Drax, and Mantis, fans expect to see him in the Guardians film as well, although we will have to see if filming dates could potentially conflict with Thor 4.

Regardless of what happens in Guardians, we look forward to seeing what Waititi has in store for Thor next.
