Doctor Strange: Now the MCU’s Highest-Grossing Single-Character Debut!

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange may not be the first time that Marvel Studios has stuck its neck out - it’s done so previously with projects like Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man - but it’s obviously the latest to pay off! Following its release in mid-October in various international territories, and in early November in North America, the movie has gone on to become the Marvel Cinematic Universe's highest-grossing worldwide single-character debut.

Iron Man, the first MCU installment, managed to hold the title comfortably for more than eight years with its $585.17 million worldwide, as movies like The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Ant-Man failed to surpass the total (or even get close). But now, Iron Man has moved to the second spot on the list of the MCU's biggest single-character introductions, as Doctor Strange sailed past the $600 million worldwide milestone over the weekend, claiming the first spot.

According to Box Office Mojo, the fourteenth MCU installment is just shy of $616 million worldwide, after adding an estimated $13.36 million domestically and $9.8 million internationally over the weekend. With $205.09 million made from the domestic market to date, Doctor Strange is the tenth MCU installment to cross the $200 million domestic milestone. It has already grossed $410.90 million in international territories, with a January 27, 2017 release in Japan still in the offing.

The Sorcerer Supreme's first standalone movie stands ninth among all 2016 domestic and worldwide releases, and fifth among the superhero movies of the year, ahead of 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse ($543.93 million worldwide). It still has a distance to travel to become the MCU's biggest standalone franchise debut, as Guardians of the Galaxy holds the record with its $773.31 million worldwide.

Exactly where Doctor Strange will find itself at the end of its box office run remains to be seen, but it has already done well enough to be termed a triumph. James Wan, director of Furious 7 and the upcoming Aquaman movie, has taken to Twitter to acknowledge Scott Derrickson's latest achievement.
