Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has shattered the box office with $424.1 million global debut. This marks the biggest superhero opening weekend ever, and the fourth biggest worldwide opening of all time. In North America, the movie has bagged around $170.1 million and nabbed the record for biggest March opening to date.
Batman v Superman was a highly anticipated movie for about three years, so its box office success shouldn't come as a surprise. However, it’s definitely a shocker when you look at the Zack Snyder flick's Rotten Tomatoes score and all of the poor reviews it has received. Could the critics slam a movie any harder?!
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein addresses the huge contrast in Batman v Superman's performance among the critics and the moviegoers. He states:
There is no question this is an extraordinary achievement. Clearly, audiences have embraced it and we are already seeing repeat business. It’s just fun. Often, there’s a disconnect between critics and audiences.
Despite breaking so many records, the true test for Batman v Superman will be how strong it stays at box office during its second and third weeks. That's something to watch out for.
