Tomb Raider Reboot to be Inspired by 2013 Video Game!

Tomb Raider reboot to be inspired by 2013 video game

Tomb Raider might be a big name in the world of video games, but it’s not that big in Hollywood. Released in 2001 and 2003, the Tomb Raider movies with Angelina Jolie playing the lead character, Lara Croft, performed decently but not outstandingly at the box office.

With The Wave director Roar Uthaug tapped to helm, Warner Bros. and MGM are developing a reboot to the franchise. Transformers 5 co-writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet is penning the script. What else do we know about the movie? Not much, but we do have this right now!

IGN recently had an opportunity to speak with Roar Uthaug, and came away with some new tidbits on the Tomb Raider reboot. The director confirmed that the movie is going to be "an origin story". He revealed that it will be similar in approach to the 2013 video game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix.

The Norwegian director shared that he's been a big fan of Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark since his younger days, which makes it "a dream to work in that kind of genre". He added that they want to make the upcoming Tomb Raider feel like "a modern action movie".

In the interview, Uthaug explained how he and his team want to present Lara Croft to the audience. Here's what he said:

I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen, as well. I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.

The director also shared that he's been playing Tomb Raider video games ever since the first one came out in 1996. He added that he's "a fan of strong female characters", which, he believes, is reflected in his previous works.
