Fans of the 1987 Robocop certainly were not fans of the 2014 Robocop movie although it paid due respects to the original one while creating few own ideas. The later one had the characters dispersed in different directions thus bearing very little resemblance with the former one.
Nevertheless, the 2014 movie has its own pool of fans who have loved the different version of Robocop starring Joel Kinnaman. Obviously, Sony didn't get their expected success from the box office run but audiences were steaming in once it started streaming on Netflix.
Domestically the 2014 Robocop was a box office failure that made only $58 million against its $100 million budget. However, the movie run fairly well overseas and made an additional $184 million. It was not overwhelming for sure but was fair enough that didn't throw the sequel idea out of the table.
Find out what the studio is thinking
Sony is planning forward
A Robocop sequel was always an uncertain venture due to the "˜less than average' success ratio. Recent reports have surfaced the probability that Sony is still planning to push through with Robocop 2 reboot although many assumed that it is no longer on the schedule of the studio.
According to Den of Geek, an insider has told them that Sony hasn't shut down plans for the sequel and still pursuing another installment.
"As it turns out, it’s not a closed project at Sony, although it doesn’t appear to be one the studio is heavily pursuing. Nonetheless, we understand that it is still welcoming pitches for a further RoboCop venture. Our source confirmed that Sony hasn’t shut the project down, although it doesn’t appear to be a high priority."
Sony is accepting pitches from renowned filmmakers as they are trying to discover a unique way to carry the franchise forward. After all, you can't keep a good cyborg down.
Spoiler ahead!
Discover a new era of Robocop
The 2014 movie created few new dimensions regarding war and technology, but a PG-13 rating masked its acceptance to younger audiences. According to few sci-fi fans, the movie was appreciable while most of the fans believe it was destined to fail as a big blockbuster.
In an effort to come out of this loophole, Sony was planning to provide a new name. According to Movieweb, the sequel to Robocop was supposedly titled Robocops and the film would revolve on "˜an army of cyborgs as the human police force is completely replaced'. This "˜may-be' sequel will, therefore, portray a new dimension of war and technology.
There is obviously no active chatter from Sony about coming back with such title but the title is still listed on IMDB. This is altogether a new idea that has yet to be explored.
The excitement of co-production
Chinese co-production?
Den of Geek speculates that if Robocops truly happens it will be a Chinese co-production. The 2014 movie was run successfully in China and earned $50 million in that country, almost matching stateside box office. As the Chinese audiences accepted the movie gleefully, it would make sense to partially set the Robocops story in China. This thread was mentioned in the 2014 film.
Like all stars, Joel Kinnaman was signed to do multiple sequels of Robocop movie. Thus, he is willing to reprise his role if the movie gets a green light. This is really a strong appeal for Sony to make a sequel as the actor was the best part of an otherwise "˜not so good' 2014 film.
Since the film performed better internationally (especially in China), a Chinese co-production plan is obviously boosting the probability of the sequel.
It's still in the balance whether Robocop will return or not. Regardless, just the possibility of Robocop 2 has got us excited. This Robocop, disguised in Joel Kinnaman deserves a sequel. Your move Sony!
