It’s finally here. DC Studios and Warner Bros. have released the first trailer for the Lanterns TV show. Coming to HBO and HBO Max later this year, this has been a long time coming and will be the first live-action Green Lantern project in quite some time. This will introduce both Hal Jordan and John Stewart to the new DC Universe. But this is an Earth-bound adventure, rather than a big intergalactic epic. Check it out for yourself.
The trailer teases a buddy-cop show between Hal and John. Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) stars as John Stewart. Kyle Chandler (Godzilla: King of the Monsters) plays Hal Jordan. He’s the older, grizzled guy teaching the young guy the ropes. The young guy being John, in this case. There’s very little superhero stuff in this trailer. Rather, it looks more like a grounded, Western cop show, with glimmers of comic book flare.
Here is the synopsis for Lanterns.
“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
A Green Lantern project has been batted around at Warner Bros. for a long time. The last time was 2011’s failed movie starring Ryan Reynolds. A Green Lantern Corps Movie was in development for years. That, however, was shelved as the former DCEU began to unravel. Another version of a live-action show was also viewed at one point. At long last though, things are finally coming together.
Meanwhile, the DC Universe is in a state of flux. Superman helped get things off to a strong start last year. James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently the heads of DC Studios at Warner Bros. However, Netflix was set to buy Warner Bros. earlier this year. Now, Paramount is set to acquire that studio. Once that deal closes, the new regime will undoubtedly want to make changes. What that means for Gunn, Safran and their plans for the DCU remains to be seen.
The cast for the series also includes Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men), Garret Dillahunt (Looper), Poorna Jagannathan (The Out-Laws) and Ulrich Thomsen (The New Pope).
Chris Mundy serves as showrunner. The pilot is co-written by Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also directing. Mundy, Lindelof, Gunn, Safran, King, Ron Schmidt and Hawes are on board as executive producers.
Lanterns premieres on HBO and HBO Max in August.
