The God of War TV series has taken a major step forward. Produced by Amazon MGM and headed to Prime Video, the adaptation of the beloved PlayStation video game series has cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos. Hurst, known for his work on Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead on AMC has direct ties to the franchise.

Hurst previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarok, which was released in 2022. As for Kratos, he’s the main character of the franchise. A Spartan by birth and a god by nature, he was raised in a martial culture and rose to command armies in service of his homeland. One day, he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle. Across ten games, Kratos has vanquished mortals, creatures and gods alike.
The live action series will closely follow the path of the last two games as he deals with his ten year old son Atreus. This father and son dynamic began a whole new chapter in the legendary series and will be the heartbeat of the new show. God of War has also extended to comic books and other media over the years. It’s tremendously popular, with the series having sold more than 75 million copies collectively to date.
Here is the synopsis for God of War.
“God of War follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
Amazon has already handed out a two-season order for the series. Pre-production is under way now in Vancouver, Canada. That being the case, we’re likely to hear more about casting in the near future. Stay tuned.
Director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout) has signed on to direct the first two episodes of God of War. Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) serves as showrunner, executive producer and writer. The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon are also on board as executive producers. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers on the series.
Prime Video has plenty on the way for superhero fans out there. Aside from the final season of The Boys, the streamer also has the Spider-Man Noir TV show on the way later this year. Additionally, Amazon is at work on the next season of the Invincible animated series. The streamer is also home to several Batman titles, including Batman: Caped Crusader.
God of War doesn’t currently have a release date.
