Marvel’s Thor Reboot Arrives In August

Immortal Thor #15 - Marvel Comics

Thor is getting both an end and a new beginning this year. The God of Thunder is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe. He’s an Avenger and a hero of Asgard. Be that as it may, he’s going to die. He won’t be dead long though and Marvel has revealed that a new version of the hero will be born this summer.

It was confirmed recently that writer Al Ewing’s Immortal Thor will conclude with issue #25 in June. More importantly, it was confirmed that the issue in question would kill off Thor. As for what comes after? That’s not come into focus as Marvel Comics has announced a new Thor #1. Ewing is staying on to write the new series, with Pasqual Ferry handling the artwork.  We’ve also got the cover art for the first issue for your to check out below.

Here is the synopsis for Thor #1.

“The Norse Myths tell of Gods who walked the Earth, doing great deeds for the mortals who believed in them. But Asgard isn’t real, and never was. The Gods never soared in our skies, never stood with our heroes, never fought for kindness or justice. It was all just a story. Nobody’s coming to help us. But somewhere in the city… a man is waking up.  A man with a hammer.”

“Since the very first issue of Immortal Thor, Thor’s been facing the end of his tale… but that was only the end of Act One,” Ewing said. “As the next chapter begins, Thor must face threats he’s never faced, from a place he’s never been… until now. Is he alive? Is he dead? Is he immortal… or much, much more? You’ll have to join us to find out.”

Characters die in mainstream comic books all the time. Superman, Wolverine and everyone in between has died only to be revived down the line. It’s just the nature of the beast. Marvel Comics rarely kills off any major characters for long. The same goes for DC. As such, it’s hardly surprising that Thor will be revived less than two months after his demise. The circumstances surrounding his resurrection remain mysterious, but that’s clearly the point.

Meanwhile, Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Thor in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday. The cast for the film is absolutely massive. It’s unclear how big of a role he will have. More importantly, it’s unclear if Hemsworth will also be back for Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude Marvel’s Multiverse Saga when it hits theaters in 2027. Who knows? We may be seeing the death of Thor on the big screen as well before long. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves.

Thor #1 hits shelves on August 27.
