Ryan Reynolds may not be making Deadpool 4 but he may be eyeing a return as Wade Wilson. The actor has confirmed that he’s currently writing a new project involving the fan-favorite mutant. This comes after the blockbuster success of last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which became the biggest R-rated movie ever. The catch? It looks like Reynolds wants to make Deadpool part of a larger ensemble.
In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds, who acted, starred in, and produced last year’s sequel, revealed that he’s writing an unnamed project involving the character. In discussing his fondness for Wesley Snipes’ return as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds explained that he wants more moments like that with Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“It’s a feeling that I want more of and I’d be able to do that as a supporting actor. I’m writing a little something right now that is…I don’t know, it’s an ensemble but I like that he’s isolated. If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-man, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment and you can’t give him that.”
Reynolds wasn’t confirmed as part of the massive cast for Avengers: Doomsday. That’s not to say he won’t show up, especially since several X-Men cast members from the past are suiting up. There’s also a more than decent chance he’ll show up in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Beyond that though? He has this project in his back pocket, it seems. Whether or not it’s something Marvel Studios is on board with or something he’s hoping to pitch them is unclear.
“In order for a character who talks like that to work you have to take everything away from him. His skin. His face. He’s covered in scars. He’s bald. He wears the mask out of shame,” Reynolds further explained. “I hijacked the first movie, I used the character to tell a story about shame, then a story about family for the second movie and this movie being about redemption. I think we nailed redemption.”
Reynolds spent years trying to get Deadpool 3 made at Marvel Studios. Once Hugh Jackman agreed to return as Wolverine, things got cooking. As for what this mystery project could be? That’s up for debate. Maybe it’s an X-Force movie. Maybe it’s something far less obvious than that. For now, we can only wonder. What we know for sure is that Marvel currently has three mystery movies on deck for 2028. Maybe this could be one of them?
Here is the synopsis for Deadpool & Wolverine.
“Marvel Studios’ ”Deadpool & Wolverine” finds Wade Wilson with his past as the morally flexible Deadpool behind him, until he suddenly finds himself in a fight for the survival of his homeworld and must suit-up again—and convince a reluctant Wolverine to help him.”
Deadpool & Wolverine is streaming now on Disney+.
