After several years of development, the new Power Rangers show is dead at Netflix. The streaming service had been planning a series based on Hasbro’s classic franchise. While the reboot may not be entirely dead, it just won’t be happening at Netflix. TVLine has confirmed that the project is no longer moving forward at the streamer, but it will be shopped around elsewhere.
The outlet explains that Hasbro is currently exploring a new creative direction for the series, with a new creative partner. There is on indication as to who that partner will be. Hasbro announced in 2021 that it had partnered with Netflix on a whole Power Rangers cinematic universe. This show was just part of the equation. Jonathan Entwistle (I Am Not Okay With This) was heading up the universe. Jenny Klein (Supernatural) was on board as the showrunner. It’s unclear if they will be involved moving forward. Michael Lombardo, the Head of Television for eOne and Hasbro at the time, had this to say about it.
“Since we set up Power Rangers with Jonathan, we pitched really a whole-world approach. It’s not just one show, it is shows followed by films, some kids’ programming. We have found a great writing partner for him, they are off. Knock on wood, Netflix is excited, we’re excited, we hope to have some news soon.”
What will happen with the Power Rangers now?
It’s unclear why Netflix decided not to move forward with the show. The streamer has been investing in the franchise in recent years. It became the streaming home of Power Rangers Dino Fury several years back. They also brought back the original Blue Ranger in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury. Netflix also released Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always in 2023, which reunited members of the original cast for a one-off film.
In any event, the streaming landscape is changing rapidly. Netflix is re-evaluating how much money to spend and what to spend it on. It seems the Power Rangers no longer fit into those plans. That said, one has to imagine that a streaming service out there would be interested in the franchise. The show has been going strong since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted in 1993. To date, nearly 900 episodes of the show’s various incarnations have been produced.
There have also been versions of the franchise in other mediums, with the Boom! comic book series running for years. However, Boom! announced earlier this year that the long-running Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic was coming to an end. So it is, in all, an odd time for the franchise. We’ll see how things shake out in the coming months.
The new Power Rangers series does not currently have a release window.
